ABSTRACT:
Emotional intelligence is an
ability to understand the meanings of emotion, their relationships and to solve
problems on the basis of it. People are aware of their own
emotions and it helps them to manage an individual's emotions, to regulate their
nature, intensity and expression and in order to have a successful personal
relationship. The main objective is to assess the emotional intelligence of
students of Saveetha Dental College through a
prepared questionnaire in evaluating their EQ and mental health.

INTRODUCTION:
Emotional intelligence
involves the ability to understand, recognise, express and control our own
emotions. Emotional intelligence is defined as a cluster of traits or abilities
relating to the emotional side of life. Emotional intelligence consists of five
major parts (1) a knowledge of our own emotions, (2) managing our emotions ,
(3) motivating ourselves, (4) recognising the emotions of others, and (5)
handling relationships. Each of these elements play a major role in shaping the
outcomes we experience in our life. Some persons are aware of their own
emotions and thoughts whereas the others seem to be totally free of these. Because
of these, they are often low in
expressiveness as they don't show their feelings clearly through facial
expressions, body language or other cues. This can directly influence on their
interpersonal communication and skills. They find it hard to actually know how
they are feeling or reacting. One should motivate oneself in achieving their
desires and should remain enthusiastic and optimistic about the final outcome. It
is also the ability to read others to recognise the mood they are in and what
emotion they are experiencing. People with high emotional quotient have
successful leadership qualities.
The persons skilled at
generating strong emotions are highly successful. Handling relationships is an
important aspect of emotional intelligence wherein they have the ability to get
along with others easily. At present, we do not posses adequate tests for
measuring the emotional intelligence and until we do, we do not completely
determine its role in our lives.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
A questionnaire based study
consisting of 18 questions were prepared and it was distributed among 51
subjects consisting of 20 males and 31 females. The subjects were made to be
seated comfortably. The questionnaire was rated on a five point scale and had
five response category including- does not apply at all, applies rarely,
applies about half the time, applies likely to me and always applies to me. There
is no right or wrong answer and there is no time limit. The subjects were made
to work rapidly and to submit the immediate response to each item. After
completion by the subjects, the responses were scored and interpreted in
accordance with the norms.

DISCUSSION:
The present experiment has been conducted to asses
the emotional intelligence of the subjects using a questionnaire based study.
It is an ability to understand the meanings of emotion, their relationships and
solve problems on the basis of them. Assessing emotional intelligence helps us
to identify strengths and weaknesses in individuals and in groups which is the
first step towards individual or group facilitation.
The n value of this experiment is 51.In the overall dimension, the
average found is 69.85 whereas the values of subjects who are emotionally
matured (strength) is 63.88 and the values of subjects who need attention in
improving their emotional maturity is 56.60. From the above graphs, it can be
clearly seen that the values of strength in males is 73 whereas that of females
is 76 which is of high degree level and the values of attention needs in
subjects who have low emotional intelligence is found to be 48 in males and 43
in females. Therefore we can conclude that the females are emotionally matured.
One of the scientific reasons why females get married by the age of 18-21 is
that they attain maturity earlier by means of mental and social healthy don
therefore this also has a direct influence on the emotional intelligence.
Therefore the subjects who are more strengthened are aware emotionally in a
high degree level. Females score being higher than men, yet both genders show
high degree level in different dimensions and hence they broadly differ in
their emotional intelligence.
CONCLUSION:
The subjects show varying scores in all dimensions. Both males and
females show high score in their respective dimensions. Therefore from this
present experiment we can conclude that females are more emotionally matured
than males. Hence individuals differ in their Emotional Intelligence.
